Zimbabwean Stone Sculpture

Art shaped by stone, story and spirit.

Original Shona sculpture created in Zimbabwe by the Tandi family of artists—works for meaningful homes, gardens and collections around the world.

“Every stone carries a voice. The work is to listen until its form becomes clear.”

— Tendekayi Tigere Tandi
The Tandi family history in art

Three generations of artists, shaped by stone.

The Tandi family’s story begins with Gabriel Tandi, a self-taught pioneer and one of the founders of the Shona art movement. Without being taught by anyone, Gabriel developed his own skills and generously shared them with many other artists.

His son, Thomas Tandi, carried that knowledge forward and helped guide the next generation. Today, Tendekayi Tigere Tandi and the wider Tandi family continue this living tradition as the third generation of artists—each developing a personal voice while remaining connected through stone, skill and heritage.

Tandi Shona Art Gallery brings together this family legacy: work made with patience, respect for natural stone and a shared belief that art should carry story, spirit and identity.

The Tandi tradition

From a young village carver to an international sculptor.

For Tendekayi, carving began as childhood play beside his father’s work in rural Zimbabwe. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong practice, shaped by stone, patience and the human stories that live within each form.

Today, Tandi Shona Art Gallery brings together a family and community of skilled Zimbabwean artists. Each sculpture is hand-carved and finished in natural stone, with its colour, movement and character respected rather than hidden.

From quarry to collection

Real stone. Real hands. A lasting work.

Every sculpture begins with the search for the right stone. The process moves from quarry to workshop, through carving, refining and polishing, until the finished work is ready for its new home.
